Use comments when feedback is about something specific, a file, a shot, or a spot on the canvas, and needs to stay attached to it instead of getting lost in a chat message or email. Internal collaborators can leave them right on the canvas; external clients can do the same from a review link without a Preview account. Either way, the comment lands in the same thread for everyone to see.

Add comments on the canvas

Open comments from the comment button in the lower-left toolbar.
  • Place anywhere: drop a comment on empty canvas or pin it to a specific file.
  • Attach images, tag people, and add emoji.
  • Reply in threads: keep discussion attached to the original comment.
  • Draw on files: use the Draw, Arrow, Line, or Box tool in 7 colors. Click the active tool again to switch back to selecting (then delete a stroke), or press ⌘/Ctrl Z to undo. Drawings are canvas-comment only, not in file view.
Comments stay attached to a file wherever it moves on the canvas.

Review comments in the sidebar

Every comment also appears in the Comments sidebar, to review discussion history and jump back to a thread.

Add comments in file view

Comments work in File View too, for review focused on one file at a time instead of the whole canvas. Switch to its Comments tab and the cursor becomes a pin; click anywhere on the file to drop it and comment, with the same replies, reactions, and resolving as canvas comments. Pins stay in sync both ways: drop one in File view and it shows on canvas too, and vice versa. This only works for generated files, not references or library images, and pins can only be placed while the Comments tab is active.

Add comments in the share window

Clients and team members can comment on a file or shot via the Share link, and those comments show up back on the file for everyone, the same as any other comment.
Use canvas comments for spatial feedback, and file-view comments for file-specific review.
